Graduate Tutoring at the Writing Center

Graduate writing presents unique challenges. To help you in your academic career, we have several Graduate Writing Tutors who are experienced in both standard writing conventions and the graduate writing genre. We can assist you in many types of writing, but here are some examples of what we commonly see:

  • Theses
  • Dissertations
  • Seminar papers
  • Publications
  • CVs and other Professional Documents
  • Job and graduate school applications

At the Writing Center, we know every writer needs a good reader, so we strive to reach writers in ways that work with the demands of grad school. We have multiple ways to meet with our graduate tutors: in-person, online synchronous via WCOnline, and online asynchronous.

In-Person

During your 60-minute in-person appointment, you will work one-on-one with a Graduate Writing Consultant to collaboratively discuss your writing. Our scheduling flexibility is set within the operating hours of our main writing center.

To schedule an appointment, visit WCOnline. If you experience any issues, please call us at (940) 565-2563, email us at GradWriting@unt.edu, or visit us in Sage 150.

Online Synchronous

Our online hours have more flexibility with scheduling. To schedule your own online appointment, visit WCOnline or email us at GradWriting@unt.edu.

During your 60-minute online synchronous appointment, you will collaboratively work one-on-one with a Graduate Writing Consultant to discuss your writing through our software WCOnline. These interactive appointments are best for getting started, talking through concepts, or discussing goals.

Online Asynchronous
For an online asynchronous appointment, you can upload your document in your appointment form when you first schedule your appointment on WCOnline. If for some reason, you experience some issue uploading your document, you can email it to GradWriting@unt.edu. During the scheduled 90 minutes of your synchronous appointment, your Graduate Writing Consultant will review your work. You will then receive an email from WCOnline that includes a client report form as well as attached Written Feedback including comments and suggestions for you to consider. Asynchronous appointments work best for established clients or works that are largely completed.

You can book appointments up to 2 weeks in advance.
How many pages can a Graduate Consultant get through?
Depending on whether you are meeting for 60 minutes or attaching a project to be reviewed asynchronously, our Graduate Consultants can cover anywhere from 5-15 pages of writing in one appointment; however, keep in mind this could change based on the state of the document. I need to format my thesis/dissertation. Will the Grad Consultants do that for me?
Our Graduate tutors are experienced in working with the content of a document. While they may be able to give general feedback, formatting is outside the scope of content. You can find the clickable UNT thesis and dissertation manual here.
